Safe Schools (Dress Policy)
The Board of Education is committed to providing a safe and secure environment where all members of the Five Star Schools may achieve district vision and goals in accordance with the District Strategic Improvement Plan.
The Board reaffirms the Resolution Concerning Safe Schools adopted on April 16, 1990. The Board believes certain apparel, accessories and symbols are likely to interfere with the safety and security of those who attend or participate in Adams Twelve schools, programs, and activities. The following items, therefore, are prohibited throughout the district:
- All attire to include T-SHIRTS, SWEATSHIRTS, JACKETS, shoes, hats, and caps representative of professional athletic teams (this includes Broncos, Rockies, Nuggets, Avalanche);
- Military apparel not associated with an endorsed district or school activity or program
- All steel-toes footwear;
- All attire indicative of gang affiliation, including but not limited to, "homie" attire, "sagging" pants; hats, caps, and bandannas/ "du-rags"*; pacifiers; any apparel which displays the insignia BK, CK, or Eight Ball;
- Hazardous apparel or jewelry, such as spiked belts, spiked wrist bands, spiked rings, spiked coats, chains or other items which are likely to injure the wearer or someone else
- Graffiti, and other symbols, emblems, badges, etc., which reflect or represent advocacy of druguse,tobacco use, violence, disruptive behavior, religeous, gender, ethnic or racial intimidation, or other symbols, emblems, badges, etc., which reflect or represent advocacy of drug use, violence, disruptive behavior, ethnic or racial intimidation, or other criminal activity
- Body marks, tattoos, or other body alterations which reflect or represent advocacy of drug use, violence, disruptive behavior, religeous, gender, ethnic or racial intimidation, or other criminal activity
- All electronic COMMUNICATION devices (RECEIVING AND TRANSMITTING EQUIPMENT), including beepers/pagers and cellular phones;
- Gang-related activity which interferes with the safe, secure and orderly learning environment. "Gang" shall be defined as set forth in state statute, reflected as an exhibit to this administrative procedure.
This list will be updated as the Superintendent deems necessary.
*Hats and caps as appropriate for the weather, except as otherwise prohibited under this procedure, may be worn outside school building
